Hacks: A New face To Comedy

Hacks is quite literally one of the funniest television shows I’ve watched in my life. The show is comedic without being crude or sexist, rather just honest, which is a big part of what makes it so exciting to watch. The show does have some issues and pokes a bit too much fun at addiction and suicide, which may prove triggering for some watchers, but overall it’s a great show.

Hacks is a fantastic show following the partnership between legendary vegas comic, Deborah Vance and her new assistant, a 25-year old outcast who has been struggling to keep a job, Ava. The two leading ladies are played by Jean Smart who plays the hilarious Deborah Vance, and Hannah Einbinder, who plays the young Ava. The show also features Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Marcus, Christopher McDonald who plays Marty, Rose Abdoo who plays Josefina, and Paul W. Downs who plays Jimmy. The show is created and directed by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky.

The show finds a way to bring up some powerful messages in describing the life of an old comedian and her new assistant. The show talked about Debroah’s life as a young comic, where she was blamed for her husband's house fire, sexually assaulted/harassed, and had to work ten times harder than the men around her. Not to mention, to top it all off, people think she’s heinous and rude because she is a strong independent woman who made her own life in this world.

Hacks is different from any of the other comedic tv shows or movies I’ve watched in my life, it wasn’t a silly sitcom or a crude comedy, it was interesting and captivating. It didn’t just get the laugh, it got the tears, the heartfelt moments, and the mistakes as well, which made it so special to watch.

The show is one of those that you quickly want to recommend to all those around you in hopes that they will love it as much as you do. I recommended this one to my dad, convinced him to watch an episode with me and he was hooked, that’s just the magic and excitement of the show.

Overall, the show, Hacks, was ten episodes of excitement. There was a special and new message in each one and is a big part of what makes it so special to watch. The show is a definite recommendation to absolutely anyone.
